Fun fact about the Oberports: we love rap music. It’s one of the genres of music where Emily and myself have overlapping interest, so naturally it’s our most-listened-to style when we’re together. If you see us rolling down the block in our Mazda 3, we’re probably banging out some Nas or UGK (or Gucci Mane, or Danny Brown, or Action Bronson.. the list goes on and on).

Two of our favorite rap artists are Atlanta, GA hard-hitter Killer Mike, and Brooklyn’s perpetually paranoid El-P. These two guys come from dramatically different hip-hop backgrounds- Mike from the gritty gangsta rap haven of the south, and El, a former label owner/producer/rapper from the concrete jungle where people first put rhymes to beats. Their bromance that began over a year ago was unexpected, but the end result produced arguably 2012’s best rap album, Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music, which was produced entirely by El-P.

Things went so well that Killer Mike and El-P decided to record a whole album together and release it for free on the internet. That project is Run the Jewels- no frills, punch-you-in-the-teeth rap that can be hazardous to your neck if you aren’t careful. If you enjoy good rap tunes and you don’t have it, go get it. (Did we mention IT’S FREE?)

We saw these guys live last year in DC and they put on one hell of a show. This time, they were accompanied by fellow artists Kool A.D. and Despot- you can see photos of Despot’s workout routine below. Both Mike and El performed solo sets before doing the Run the Jewels set together.

They still have a lot of tour dates left – you can check those out here.

Here are some photos Emily took with our X100 at the show:
