The Mystery Hole is one of the most beloved oddities found within the mountains of West Virginia. Like any good roadside attraction it has a colorful, run-down aesthetic with promises of the weird and wacky to entice passers-by. Seemingly everyone around these parts knows of it, and yet we’ve never seen anyone take Mystery Hole WV portraits! That’s where we come in.
When Lori got in touch with us she floated the idea of doing family photos at the infamous Mystery Hole near Hawk’s Nest State Park in Ansted, WV. We love working with Lori– check out the awesome dance photos we did with her daughter a few years back! We’re always game to get weird, and so we did. You can’t take photos in the actual “gravity-defying” Mystery Hole room, but luckily the outside is every bit as quirky as what’s inside. Sheet metal splattered with psychedelic primary colors, a “Redneck Taxi” lodged in the side of the building, and large plastic bears and wolves because why the hell not?
The Mystery Hole is located near the gorgeous Cathedral Falls so we headed over there for some family photos afterwards. The size of the waterfall can vary wildly depending on the weather, but it’s always a lovely location for family portraits and engagement photography near Charleston, WV.
