Our Cape Cod Whale Watching Trip

We love Cape Cod. We visit a few times a year and love visiting lighthouses and all the cozy little towns and eating all the lobster rolls and clam chowder we can get our hands on.
After shooting a beautiful wedding in Boston over the weekend, we are currently unwinding for a few days before heading back to West Virginia. This morning we went on a Whale Watching cruise and had an amazing time! We were pretty sure we’d see a few whales, but we were both really blown away by how incredible the experience was.
We came across a group of humpback whales right away which included two babies.
This whale waved at us. Hi!
But the most amazing part of the trip was at the end. I was standing at the back of the deck and there weren’t many other people around. A guy next to me tossed a chip into the water, and ten seconds later a huge mouth starts to appear in the water right next to the boat. I can’t put into words how huge this mouth was.
The whale then used our boat to scratch its back. Our boat was really big, so we couldn’t feel him doing this, but it was incredible. It disappeared under the boat, and everyone rushed to the other side. A few seconds later, the big boy rose to the surface again, but this time he was floating on his back — he used the boat to scratch his belly!!
The whale’s name was Colt, and our naturalist explained that this particular whale hadn’t been spotted since 2013, so it was extra special to get a visit from him.
If you are ever in Cape Cod, we highly recommend taking a Hyannis Whale Watcher cruise! We knew it would be neat, but we weren’t expecting to have one of the coolest afternoons of our lives. It’s not everyday you get to watch a whale scratch its belly with the boat you’re standing on!!

Amazing! I would love to do this one day.
Isn’t it incredible? I did one in Maui, and the humpbacks are amazing. Love your photos, gorgeous as always!
